Riddle me this.

How are we supposed to teach our daughters about healthy body image when we are bombarded with messages like this?

I think it's very sad that Gemma gave up on modeling. She's a very beautiful woman and I think she could make a name for herself in the plus-size niche. You know, give Crystal Renn a run for her money. I would love to see curvier girls in fashion and Gemma Ward represents curvy women like no other.

News.com screams: Australia's top model export, Gemma Ward has quit the profession following attacks on her new shape.

Now. Disclaimer. I think the person in the original blog meant well. I don't think they were necessarily being critical of her. But the reference to her as a 'plus size' model boggles the mind.

Comments like:
"A fashion insider explained that Ward would have to keep a low profile if she wanted to protect her future earnings.

Every kilo a model puts on costs them thousands in potential advertising dollars,'' the insider said.

My issue.

This is what Gemma looked like before, when she was at the top of her profession, modelling for Chanel, Vogue and Versace, to name a few.

This is her now, a year or two later. Admittedly, she has gained weight.

Now when I went to Google Images and Typed in Gemma Ward it said "Related Search - Gemma Ward Fat".

Sigh. So I typed in Plus Sized Model. This is what I got.

That's right, my friends. She's a fatty. She is representative of Plus Size.

I am plus sized. If I was that kind of plus size, I dont' believe I'd ever get out of that lingerie (and is it just me or is that adorable).

If we're teaching our daughters, our nieces, our students that this is what overweight looks like, what hope do they have? How are they going to navigate those angst-ridden teenage years without knowing what a healthy body really looks like.

When did we decide we preferred this

to this?

When did curves stop being a thing of beauty, sensual, seductive, healthy?

Touched a cord with me, as a true plus size women, I get sick and tired of people saying size 14 is plus sized. Even the clothes shop that I normally buy from has a women who would be lucky to be a 16 (which is there smallest size) in their catalogue (I would guess she is a 14 at best and they tailor the clothes at the back - you never see a reverse shot). There has been a push in the modeling world about not letting young models get too thin, but I am not sure how well it has taken off.

I honestly dont know how people think that skeletal models are attractive! its horrible! Give me a curvaceous model any day, like Mia Tyler, Liv Tyler's sister! Id like to see more curvaceous models in magazines, not walking skeletons!

Wow. Your words, coupled with those photographs, are poignant. Those "plus size" women are simply stunning and even look like more fun, if that's possible.

We'll never win, though. I went through a hell of a lot of stress 6 months back and could not get by a single person on any given day without being harassed about looking "revolting". I did look awful, too, and since that time, have changed a bunch of things to rectify it - including increasing my fitness levels at the gym. Guess what? Now that I am muscular and athletic looking, some of the women I work with tell me I look like a man. *sigh*

BRILLIANTLY written post Melissa....I am cheering!

I had not heard or seen that Gemma Ward had "retired" or gained weight but I am amazed reading about the response to that.

Whitney (the blonde girl in your photos) was the winner of Americas Next Top Model a couple of seasons again.....she is a stunning and gorgeous girl, full of personality and intelligence - she is "curvier" in comparison to the other girls on the show but to call her plus size always seemed crazy.

The world is mad sometimes....skeletal, so called heroin chic is never attractive and nor is the fashion to be a size zero....ugh!

I have to say that even in my blog I do make a point of not using a photo if the model looks unnaturally thin - it is just not what I find attractive.

Great post honey!!

Simone :)

In my career I have struggled with this over the last 10 years (teaching). When you have 8 year old girls saying they don't want to eat because they will get fat, well alarm bells sound!

I think however that thin=attractive is something that has been around for years. The only way to counteract it with our girls is to teach them what makes up an attractive woman/person. That it has nothing to do with the media or how they look and all to do with who they are on the inside. Sure wear the latest fashions, follow the latest trends but also understand, what will make you look attractive to others is not the threads you bare but the way you treat others, your personality.

I don't think it will be impossible to keep my daughter on the right track with body image. She has a wonderful cousin to look up to who is incredibly popular and incredibly beautiful and not stick thin. I will also be here to pump up her ego and help her back on the right track if she does falter.

With my students though..well I will do all I can in the 6 hours I see them..the rest is up to the parents. Although our jobs would be a hell of alot easier if the media started portraying real women as beautiful..which is exactly your point :) (and a wonderfully written post too :) ) .

Actually, I wish Gemma WOULD become a plus-size model! I've always been a fan of fuller-figured models! There's a great site with many images of Crystal and other plus-size models here:

They're all gorgeous.

The site's forum also has thought-provoking discussions about body image and the media.
